Deciding that you want to stop taking opiates is a huge step in the right direction. Most people get to a point where they do not want to continue living handcuffed to a drug. It takes everything in your being to be successful in recovery. Many addicts who are looking to get clean start their research on the internet. They look for different options to help them get clean. You will see many people giving their 2 cents about what you NEED to do or you will not be successful in your recovery. Do yourself a favor, take all of the advice you receive with a grain of salt. People are going to push what worked for them because they are excited that they are clean. Just because it worked for them, does not mean it will work for you.
People ask my advice on a daily basis. It is important to understand that I am not a doctor, health care professional or a substance abuse counselor. I am a recovering addict who has helped thousands of addicts by being their for them and shooting them straight. I can honestly tell you that the only thing that matters is the end result. Whether you decide to taper or go cold turkey, that really doesn't matter. What matters is that you end up clean and living the life you deserve. But for this articles sake I will go over what I have learned about both options.
Speaking with thousands of addicts I can tell you that the majority of addicts who try to taper do not succeed. That DOES NOT mean that you will not. I have spoken with tons who have successfully tapered off of opiates. The good thing about tapering is that it theoretically lessens your withdrawal symptoms. This is because you are gradually dropping your dose over a period of time and your body starts to get used to less and less until you jump off completely. You will still feel withdrawal symptoms but they will not be nearly as bad as if you go cold turkey. The downside to tapering is that it prolongs the process.
Going cold turkey can be very difficult for people to do. Most people fear withdrawals so much that the idea of going cold turkey scares them to death. They know they will be ill and feel terrible and this fear keeps them from trying. Yes going cold turkey is uncomfortable, but the process is over much quicker. Many people get to a point where they do not want to touch another bag of dope or pop another pill ever again. They are tired of being sick and tired and have had enough.
Whatever way you choose to get off opiates, I wish you the best. It will feel like it is not worth the pain while you are going through it but I PROMISE you that it will not last forever. It may be the single greatest thing you will ever do for yourself.
