Robert Downey Jr. is a household name due to his starring roles as Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, but the glorious life of an A-lister almost didn't happen. Downey wasn't always at the top of the celebrity world. In the early 1990's, Downey was in and out of jail and institutions for his addiction to heroin, cocaine and alcohol.
He was notorious for unbelievable stories that occurred while he was intoxicated, and there is even a famous 911 call of one of his escapades. In May of 1996, a woman frantically called 911 after she found Robert Downey Jr. asleep in her 11 year old son's bed. High on drugs, he entered (broke into) the wrong home, stripped down to his boxers, folded his clothes and went to sleep. On the 911 recording, you can actually hear the woman talking while Downey Jr. is snoring in the background.
From racing down Sunset Boulevard drunk and high with a .357 magnum and a large amount of drugs, to being arrested naked and hallucinating behind the wheel of his Porche. The man was known for being an addict and a very bad one at that. He became the poster boy for wasted talent. Downey Jr. became very cocky about his acting abilities and self proclaimed himself as the greatest actor of his generation. His sad escapades left many people unhappy with his actions and gave up on him. He had sunk to his lowest when he was found in an alley behind a rat infested L.A. Hotel high on drugs. When he faced the judge, he was quoted as saying “Taking drugs to me is like having a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal.”
Today you will find a much different Robert Downey Jr. He is one of the highest paid and sought after actors in the world. His movies make rake in billions of dollars, and he recently signed a record breaking 100 million dollar deal with Disney for 2 more episodes of Iron Man. He lives in a gorgeous home in Malibu overlooking the Pacific, has private jets and even his own chef. He has taken the talent he always knew he had and fulfilled the promises he made.
How did this man make such an unbelievable come back? Hard work and dedication to living a sober life. Reading about his story is so inspiring for me personally. I love hearing about people who were down and out and how they made a complete 180. He is a great role model for anyone in recovery. It shows that no one is ever “too far gone.” If you want to live a sober and clean life and are willing to give your whole life to attaining it, you will be successful. That same desire to live is then transformed into things you love to do, for Downey Jr. it is to act. Look how amazing that worked out for him.
